Addendum – Mehmood & Leela Chitnis Connection
Good Morning,
Mehmood’s father Mumtaz Ali and Leela Chitnis were both pivotal early-era artists associated with Bombay Talkies the legendary Indian film studio founded by Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani in 1934. While they worked together on specific films their primary connection is their status as foundational talents who helped establish the studio in the 1930s and 1940s. Mumtaz Ali was a well known character actor and dance director in the early era of Hindi cinema and Mehmood spent his childhood in Bombay Talkies studios…

When Mehmood called us and said,“Kulkarnisab, since you are the only source, I want to meet my mother Leela Chitnis, So, Would you please arrange it for me..? If so, I will see you next week.” Surprisingly, he spoked with us in fluent Marathi…
Leelatai passed away in 2003 and Mehmood passed away in 2004. Rest is history…
